In his design, the caravan Odorico PORDENONE transforms into an original and extraordinary space in which aesthetic and functional solutions are combined.
Jakub Novák himself acknowledges: “After 6 months studying the problem from the design, technical and historical points of view, it was clear that the solution must be all-encompassing. Such a specific setting, in which exterior and interior are so unusually interconnected and each inside centimetre is fought for at the expense of the external design - I took it as a challenge. My motivation was to create something which had never existed before.” (1)
The prestigious National Award for Student Design presented by Design Cabinet CZ picks out each year promising young students at Czech schools. In its 20th year, the announcement ceremony was held on 11th Nov 2011. Here, the university jury, which had been impressed by the Odorico PORDENONE design, granted Jakub Novák the Award for Excellent Student Design 2011. The talented designer was also given the National Technical Museum Award (which included his the work within the collection) and the Award of the Director of Institute of Art and Design of the West-Bohemian University in Pilsen. The most recent accolade was a special jury prize in the competition Talent Design 2011.
The design was developed under the supervision of Ing. Dana Rubínová, Ph.D. The caravan was aptly named Odorico PORDENONE after a medieval explorer with Czech roots who on his way to Beijing allegedly visited Tibet and was the first European ever to do so.
The design of the Odorico PORDENONE was also acknowledged abroad. Jakub Novák’s work was seen at the biennale of industrial design in the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana (known as BIO 22), where designers from all over the world present their work. A Polish design quarterly 2+3D ranked the caravan design among the 22 most interesting diploma theses of Polish, Czech and Slovak universities.
The design of the caravan is protected as a registered industrial design at the Czech Industrial Property Office. The BUT Department of Technology Transfer which includes in its brief the industrial and legal protection designs developed at the university, made sure that the Odorico PORDENONE design was protected as an industrial design.
