New production method for slag-agloporite concrete

Prof. Ing. Jiří Adámek, CSc. and Ing. Michal Batelka of the Institute of Building Testing at the BUT Faculty of Civil Engineering are the originators of a new technical solution concerning slag-agloporite concrete. This is prepared using artificial sintered aggregate of power-plant or heating-plant fly-ash, so-called agloporite - namely the 4-8 mm fraction. As an additional filler, power-plant slag of the same fraction is used as a substitute for natural aggregate.

In the new method for producing slag-agloporite concrete, which is now protected on behalf of the originators by the IPO CZ as a utility model, artificial aggregate based on power-plant waste is used, which means potentially attractive technology for power plants and heat plants, which are producers of large amounts of slag and fly-ash. In using this technology they have an opportunity to reprocess waste into a product subsequently used in civil engineering.

The originators’ principal idea for agloporite production is to use in particular fly-ash from existing dumps in which slag-fly mixtures are deposited in large amounts. These dumps, which are located in large volumes mostly abroad (Russia, Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria, but in Slovakia as well), will be a source of inputs for the production of agloporite concrete. The first step is sorting out the mixtures and the subsequent use of the fly-ash thereby acquired for the production of agloporite and slag of 4-8 mm fraction as a substitute for aggregate in concrete. The utilization of slag-ash mixtures, which are of no current use, is particularly significant because waste will be utilized as a secondary material, which will have a positive ecological effect on the environment. The realization of this technical solution enables the combined common use of ash and slag contained in the slag-ash mixture extracted from dumps. At the same time, it means that the high-quality extracted natural aggregate is saved.

The originators of agloporite, used by them for producing slag-agloporite concretes, prepare it themselves in pilot-plant equipment to which the announcer has had access and which was built as part of a previous research project.
