Cooperation with universities can bring more than you might expect

At work I often hear the question: “How might a company cooperate with Brno University of Technology?” Bit by bit I then discover that there are lots of companies in our country which have no clue that cooperating with universities can consist of something more than writing out final theses for students. Access to science at universities is constantly increasing and is also influenced by grants from the European Union. It was these grants which have helped us to equip laboratories and establish new research centres.

Therefore we can do more for you than you might think. Miroslav Cais from the company CAIS s.r.o. also found this out. He was brought to us by Ing. Luděk Dobšík from Credit Marketing, s.r.o. The company helped CAIS s.r.o. to acquire resources from the European Union. In order to obtain them, the company cooperated with the university. Initially, CAISs.r.o. instructed the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering to verify the load capacity of the moving part of a gate and its material wear. However, when Cais came to the faculty to show some sample parts of the product, our experts at the Institute of Machine and Industrial Design (namely Ing. Dvořáček, Ph.D. and doc. Ing. Mazal, CSc.) could see at once that the samples were oversized.

So when the first research was finished, CAIS s.r.o. immediately ordered new research to verify the material thickness. Our experts demonstrated that in this particular product the material thickness could be significantly reduced, which would have a substantial impact on costs when subdividing the material. And since Cais came to us with this problem at the time when the invitation for innovation vouchers of the South Moravian Region was launched, he asked for the voucher. Innovation vouchers can finance contract research by as much as CZK 100,000. When it came to drawing a successful lot, however, CAIS s.r.o. was unsuccessful. Nonetheless, despite his bad luck, Miroslav Cais remained undaunted and used the company’s own resources to cooperate again with BUT, confident in the belief that such investment would pay off. An agreement on long-term cooperation was concluded with the company. The cooperation resulted in confirmation of the researchers’ expert opinion and demonstrated that the material used in manufacturing could be thinner by as much as 2 mm while still retaining its required functional properties; the structure as a whole was also optimized. Not only has this brought about considerable savings for the company, but also the manufacturing process can now be improved and two manufacturing operations combined into one. CAIS s.r.o. has decided to sponsor a student’s project at the Institute of Machine and Industrial Design – the development of a pneumobile.

Would you like to get help in a similar matter? Would you like to innovate your company? Or do you have trouble with a machine or a component that keeps breaking down and you don’t know why? Whatever the reason for cooperating, get in touch right away! We will select the department at the Brno University of Technology which will best serve your needs. We will verify the technical capacity of the department and mediate contact with professionals. Getting several departments collaborating on a single project is not a problem either.
