Inspiration from Cubism and Scandinavian design, and following the latest trends

01. 07. 2015

Theimplicity of the avant-garde art movement, purity of style and the practicality of Scandinavian design. These were the basic prerequisites in creating a unique concept of a table lamp. In the second, a similar project, it was inspiration from the latest hi-tec trends.

Approximately half a century was bridged by a team of authors from the Institute of Machine and Industrial Design, at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Brno University of Technology, in their working on a table lamp design. The result blend together the Norse design school, with its beginnings dating to the 50s and 60s of the last century, and the authors themselves admit being influenced by Cubism, i.e. the art style experiencing its development and boom some fifty years earlier, in the first two decades of the 20th century. However, the involved technologies are purely contemporary – touch control and LED strips as the source of light.

The result of their work clearly shows the dynamics caused by simple structuring of the single parts of the lamp, the sharply cut edges and distinct shaping of both the pedestal and arm. The linear structuring of the parts, along with sharp edges, does not interfere with the overall visual purity of the table lamp.

The overall concept has been projected so that it can be realized using currently used technologies. The shape of the design represents a unique solution in the field of production of lamps. In the design respect, it brings interesting structuring and shape design to single parts of the lamp, in association with a sophisticated solution to the control. The table lamp design is the subject of protection by an industrial design (here is the reference to the IPO /Industrial Property Office/ register). The authors cooperating in the creation of it were: Ing. arch. Vladimír Haltof, Ph.D., Ing. Róbert Machálek and Markéta Brávková, BcA.

All those engaged also took part in another similar project in which they cooperated with Ing. Martin Metlický. Again, it is a design of a table lamp, yet this time it is in consideration of the latest trends. The use of LED technologies was a coupling element between both projects.

The design is based on purity of shape and, mostly, geometric shaping, with the exception of an organic transition in the point of the pivot. An important characteristic element is the break in the upper part of the lamp, where the switch button is also situated. The prevailing material is high-gloss black plastic, except for the middle part, made of rough black plastic, and the front half of the central segment, which exposes the cable and thus contributes to the overall visual impression.

The interesting appearance of the lamp is also supported by curving of the middle and upper segments, which adds a dynamic image without affecting the shape's stability. A variability of positions gives the potential user the opportunity to adapt the functional positioning of the lamp to his/her needs and taste. The lamp is protected by an industrial design.
