Camera system for quality control of extruded polymeric fibers


The special camera system is used for quality control of extruded (mainly polymeric) fibers. These fibers can have full profile or they can be hollow. The diameter and cylidricity of the fiber can be predicts by compositing of the views and their evaluation. It is possible to identify various shaped defects using this method.

Description of the technology

The camera system is used for visual monitoring and dimensions measurement of the polymeric hollow fibers especially.

There are three fast scanning digital cameras directed at the fiber which are arranged in a plane perpendicular to the onward fiber in the angular spacing of 120°. For the setting up of the focal length it is possible to move cameras in the scanning direction and set up them in the required distance. The fiber is lightened by the efficient LED light source and obliquely incident rays. A winding device secures constant stress of the extruded fiber within the controlled section.

The digital signal is supplied from cameras to a computer for following data processing and evaluation. The fiber winding can be stopped when the fiber diameter or another shape error is out of tolerance range.

  • Continuous visual fiber monitoring compared with currently used discontinuous microscopic way of quality control - it allows monitoring of the whole fibers and not only random parts
