Institute of Process and Environmental Engineering

The Institute of Process and Environmental Engineering offers cooperation in the efficient energy use of fossil, renewable and alternative fuels, the efficient energy use of waste (including analyses of such materials), experimental research into technologies for reducing concentrations of pollutants, combusting gaseous and liquid fuels and liquid wastes, etc.

Research and development at the Institute of Process and Ecological Engineering is based partly on developing and making full use of the experimental base, which thereby enables research results to be implemented into industry, and partly on the use of modern computational methods and systems. The Institute of Process and Ecological Engineering is the pivotal worksite and initiator in the development of the NETME Centre project – New Technologies for Mechanical Engineering.

We offer the following:

  • Analysis of the effective use of energy sources (including renewable sources and waste)
  • Designing special heat exchangers
  • Simulations based on sophisticated approaches (CFD - Computational Fluid Dynamics, finite element method and balance calculations using internally developed software packages)
  • Application of cogeneration in energy systems
  • Integration of units for thermally processing biomass into current and new energy systems
  • Optimization and evaluation of units for generating energy from waste
  • Research into and development of innovative elements in fermentation processes
  • Effective use of alternative fuels in energy-demanding processes
  • Energy and cost-efficient balance of WWTP sludge terminals
  • Developing and testing burners for liquid and gaseous fuels
  • Testing the combustion of liquid fuels and waste
  • Mathematical simulation of combustion and heat transfer
  • Creation and verification of mathematical models describing real actions
  • Designs for apparatuses and their optimization
  • Current-voltage analyses, assessment of equipment safety
  • Optimization of heat and water use in a professional laundry

Equipment:

  • Testing room of burners (the most modern testing equipment in Central Europe)
  • Experimental equipment for the thermal and catalytic processing of waste gases contaminated with organic substances and carbon monoxide
  • Experimental equipment for cleaning waste gases (combustion products)
  • Combined method of filtration/adsorption, and/or selective catalytic reduction
  • Experimental equipment for the two-stage absorption cleaning of combustion products
  • A prototype unit with 1MW performance for the energy use of various types of biomass
  • Internally developed software system for energy analyses: W2E
  • Laboratory for analysing the physical properties of materials - enabling analyses of lower heating value, dry matter, viscosity and heat capacity
