Institute of Metal and Timber Structures

One of the primary criteria in the design process, which includes safety, reliability and durability, is dimensioning building structures for stress effects.

The department’s activities are focused on development and research. It is engaged in designing, assessing and experimentally verifying building structures, in particular made of steel, aluminium, wood, composites and structural glass, with regard to their reliability, safety and durability, all of which ensue from the dimensions, materials and structural composition.

We offer the following:

  • Expert opinions and expertise regarding structural systems in buildings, in particular those made of steel, wood, composites and structural glass
  • Supporting thedesign of planned structures and recalculations of realized structural systems in buildings
  • Drawing up designs for the modification, reconstruction and/or reinforcement of structures in use
  • Experimental verification of actual effects, defined limit states and the process of remodelling elements and parts of construction systems
  • Verification of theoretical analysis and the idealized calculation of elements, construction details and structural systems using stress testing
  • Support for the use of progressive materials, details and construction systems as part of developing structures for building works and bridges

Equipment:

The department’s equipment includes software products for analysing, dimensioning and processing drawings of structural systems, and particularly a testing room with equipment enabling the verification of actual effects, bearing capacity, remodelling and the limit states of elements, parts and construction systems.

Overview of the basic equipment of the test room at the Institute of Metal and Timber Structures:

  • Testing break track with the size of free usable area of the loading frame approx. 4000 x 5500 mm
  • Testing break track with the size of free usable area of the loading frame approx. 2500 x 3000 mm
  • Fluid motors (testing hydraulic cylinders) for the static and dynamic loading of testing bodies with a capacity of 10 kN, 100 kN and 400 kN
  • Testing press for static loading with a capacity of 200 kN and 1000 kN
  • Hydraulic cylinders (loading presses and lifters) with a capacity of 250 kN, 600 kN, 1000 kN, 2000 kN
  • Equipment for applying loading technology of areal construction parts using a vacuum
  • Digital measuring centre for data sensing, tensometric measurements and a system for sensing deflection
  • Ultrasound thickness meter

Depending on the type of loading test, we also cooperate in experiments with other partner departments at the faculty, e.g. the institutes of Building Testing, Railway Structures and Constructions, Geodesy etc.
